Condors Varsity Recap - Feb 15 - 22
The Condors were represented at the OCAA Championships in badminton at Seneca College while both basketball teams competed in road playoff matchups. The weekend was highlighted by a podium finish from the men’s doubles pairing of Ryan Tu and Max Barnes, who captured bronze in a competitive field!
Badminton
The Condors competed at the 2026 OCAA Badminton Championships at Seneca College on Feb. 20 and 21, with athletes representing Conestoga across singles, doubles, and mixed doubles competition.
The highlight performance came in Men’s Doubles, where Ryan Tu and Max Barnes combined for a 5-3 record to earn the bronze medal. The duo defeated Humber in the playoff round to secure the program’s first OCAA medal in men’s doubles since 2008, finishing third overall in a deep championship field.
In Men’s Singles, Conestoga was represented by Akashdeep Singh and Thinh Nguyen. Singh posted a 2-3 record in Pool A, while Nguyen went 3-3 in Pool B, collecting multiple wins against strong provincial competition. Both athletes competed hard through pool play but did not advance to the playoff rounds.
In Women’s Doubles, the pairing of Ayshanur Janybek and Akai Kai battled through a challenging round robin schedule against top seeded teams from Humber, Seneca, and Fanshawe. Although they did not qualify for the playoff bracket, the experience adds valuable championship exposure for a developing pairing.
In Mixed Doubles, Mariam Muqeem and Nolan Bridge recorded a 2-4 mark in pool play. The pair showed competitiveness throughout the tournament but narrowly missed out on advancing to the playoff rounds.
Across all events, the Condors gained meaningful championship experience while competing against the province’s top programs.
Women’s Basketball
Feb. 21 | at Algonquin | L, 51-40
Conestoga opened playoff action in Ottawa and battled through four quarters against Algonquin. The Condors trailed 15-9 after the first quarter but tightened defensively in the second, holding Algonquin to 12 points to enter halftime within four.
Jamila Beckford led the offence with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Ella Schumacher added 8 points. Alicia Bujold contributed 7 points off the bench, and Maliyah Calvert pulled down 9 rebounds as Conestoga finished with 36 total boards.
The Condors generated 13 points off turnovers and recorded 24 points in the paint but shot 27.8 percent from the field in the contest. The result brought their playoff run to an end.
Men’s Basketball
Feb. 22 | at Seneca | L, 76-72
The Condors closed out their season with a tightly contested playoff matchup against Seneca. Conestoga shot an efficient 54.5 percent from the field and carried a 40-38 lead into halftime after a strong 23-point second quarter.
Ladera Obang paced the offence with 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Terell Lloyd added 11 points and 3 steals, Luka Philavong contributed 8 points and 4 rebounds, and Emanuel Liyaw finished with 7 points and a team-high 7 assists.
Conestoga produced 36 points in the paint and received 26 bench points, but Seneca held a 48-36 advantage inside and recorded 13 second chance points to secure the four-point win. The loss marked the conclusion of the Condors’ 2025–26 season.
Condors of the Week
Ryan Tu & Max Barnes | Men’s Badminton
Ryan and Max delivered a podium performance at the OCAA Championship, going 5-3 and defeating Humber to capture the Bronze Medal in Men’s Doubles.
Their finish marks the first OCAA medal in Men’s Doubles for the Condors since 2008.
